Brief Character History
Stephen Slade was an impassioned Hollywood film director. When he first appeared in Santa Barbara, he convinced his idol, former actress Sophia Capwell, to star in his latest movie, Journeys. Soon, Stephen gave himself a part in the movie and was clearly obsessed with his kissing scenes with Sophia. Also, instead of being in control on the set, he behaved neurotically and made frequent changes to his script.

As it turned out, Stephen's movie was a thinly disguised version of the Capwells' lives. He actually formed a brotherhood with fellow orphans Derek Griffin, Ethan Asher and Craig Hunt to find the murderer of their childhood friend Cassandra Benedict, the Capwell foster daughter. Convinced that Sophia had nothing to do with Cassie's murder, Stephen instead suspected C.C. Capwell of the crime. Later, Stephen and the rest of the brotherhood were shocked when Cassie turned out to be not dead.

Once Stephen's movie was in the can, it was mysteriously destroyed in a fire, leaving Stephen bitter and convinced that C.C. was responsible. He turned to teaching acting and became intrigued with Laken Lockridge, one of his students. Laken became infatuated with Stephen, but nothing came of it. Stephen was more interested in Cassie and fell in love with her. Cassie did not reciprocate his romantic feelings.

Later on, Stephen learned that Cassie's fingerprints were found in the office where Stephen's movie was stored before the fire. When confronted, Cassie denied burning the film. Stephen didn't believe her and mysteriously disappeared. He was soon forgotten.
