Carmen Castillo was the rebellious younger sister of Cruz Castillo. She came to Santa Barbara in May 1987 to stay with Cruz for her own safety, having witnessed a drug deal involving a customs official. At the time, Cruz was consumed with grief because his fiancee, Eden Capwell, had disappeared and was believed to be dead. Carmen had never met Eden, but she attempted to help her brother through his grieving. She even tried to play matchmaker for him and Eleanor Norris. She arranged for the two to be stuck on an island, but a fire broke out and Cruz and Eleanor nearly died. Meanwhile, Cruz acted like a true older brother to Carmen. He read her the riot act after catching her almost smoking pot with some guys. He also got her a job as a receptionist at his new detective agency, The Last Resort. But Carmen was not happy working at a desk. She wanted to play detective herself, against the wishes of Cruz and his detective partner Pearl Bradford. She stubbornly went behind their backs and tried to get info on the recent kidnapping of young Johnny Wallace. To that end, she visited the adoption agency that was linked to the boy's disappearance, where she posed as a pregnant, unwed teenager who wanted to give up her baby for adoption. Pearl rescued Carmen. When Eden returned from the dead, Carmen immediately took a liking to her. Soon after, Eleanor Norris (a.k.a. Elena Nikolas) was killed, and Cruz was put on trial for the crime. A devastated Carmen knew that her brother was innocent and tried to help him, first by locating a key witness, Pamela Capwell Conrad, and then by being involved in the plan to help Cruz escape during Kelly Capwell and Jeffrey Conrad's wedding. Eventually, Cruz's name was cleared. As 1988 began, Carmen dated a no-good guy named Blister during a party at the Lair. The evening became a disaster when Blister got drunk and hit Hayley Benson with his van. Carmen exposed Blister and mourned Hayley's death along with the others. Later, Carmen was kidnapped by Harry Winslow, Cruz's ex-spy partner. After Cruz rescued her, she wasn't seen again. She also didn't attend Cruz and Eden's wedding, because of illness. Still, she was sometimes mentioned by her family in the following years. |
