Time:
August 1984
Setting: The
Lockridge
mansion
Characters: Joe,
Minx and Augusta
Premise: Having
been released
from prison, Joe
Perkins is hired
by Augusta
Lockridge. He's
fixing the door
frame when
Augusta's
mother-in-law, Minx,
enters the room.
Minx:
Stop it!
Stop that noise!
Stop that
racket! Stop...
Joe:
(Stops) Sorry.
Hammers tend to
make a little
racket, ma'am.
Minx:
What are you
doing in here?
Joe:
Your door
frame is a
little loose. I
was fixing it.
Minx:
Oh leave it
alone, there's
nothing wrong
with that... (Astonished)
You're Joe
Perkins!
Joe:
Right.
Minx:
Well had I
known, I might
not have dared
come in here. (Startled)
Drop that hammer!
Joe:
(Lays
down the hammer)
It was your
daughter-in-law,
Mrs. Lockridge,
that hired me.
Minx:
That's like
her.
Joe:
I'll get out
now.
Minx:
Did you kill
that Capwell
boy?
Joe:
No.
Minx:
Are you
lying?
Joe:
No ma'am.
Minx:
I've read
about you.
Joe:
Everybody
has.
Minx:
When I read
about you, I
thought of your
family, your
poor mother and
your poor father.
Joe:
Oh yeah it's
been hell for
them.
Minx:
You sound
sorry.
Joe:
I am. Well I
can leave now.
Minx:
I heard your
father had an
accident. Is he
all right now?
Joe:
Yeah he's
okay, his leg
acts up
sometimes.
Minx:
And your
poor mother?
Joe:
She's
hanging in there.
Minx:
Five years
in prison.
It's a long
time.
Joe:
Yes.
Minx:
(Fascination
showing through)
Tell me, uh,
for a man in
modern prison,
uh, do you have
any female
companionship?
Joe:
(Amused) Well
I didn't. They
haven't gotten
that modern yet.
At least mine
wasn't.
Augusta:
(Enters
the room) Well
how's it going?
Joe:
Oh fine,
fine. I was just
getting
acquainted with
Mrs. Lockridge
here.
Minx:
Yes stick
around, I have
several things
in mind for you
to do.
Joe:
Fine.
Anytime.
Augusta:
(Sarcastic)
Leave him
alone, Minx.
He's too young
for you. (Walks
out of room.)
(Undeterred,
Minx winks at
Joe and smiles.)
